An international travel visa is not required for U.S. citizens to visit those countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program. However, to enter those countries that are not on the Visa Waiver countries list you will need to obtain a visa from your destination country.
For those citizens of other countries, the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) demands that you must use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) and submit a travel authorization request before boarding any mode of transportation headed to the United States. Submitting the request online speeds up the process of obtaining permission to travel to and enter the U.S. For trips of business or pleasure, with a duration of less than 91 days, visitors to the U.S. can travel without having to wait for a visa.
For American citizens who are traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and most islands of the Caribbean, you will need a passport. And since October 1, 2007, if you don't have your passport then you don't travel to those areas.
Just a note for those interested in traveling to Australia: All visitors Down Under must have a tourist visa. However, for Canadians and Americans, you can get an Electronic Travel Authority visa by applying online.
No matter what country you are traveling to, you need to double check and make sure you have the appropriate documentation, whether a Travel Visa
, proof of citizenship or a passport.
