singaporeflagA Singapore visa is a document that may or may not be needed depending on your citizenship. For those citizens from countries who must obtain a visa, it's important to start the application process early so you'll have your visa for Singapore well in advance of your departure date.

Before applying for a visa, be sure you have a valid passport. It must not expire within 6 months from your date of entry into Singapore. You'll also need to prove that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay at Singapore. Lastly, you'll have to show that you have a round-trip airline ticket to prove that you intend to return to your home country.

Singapore classifies countries requiring a visa to Singapore under two categories: Nationals of Assessment Level 1 Countries, and Nationals of Assessment Level 2 Countries.

Level 1 countries currently include India, Nigeria, Myanmar, People's Republic of China and the countries under the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Level 2 countries currently are Afghanistan, Egypt, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Somalia, Sudan, Algeria and Syria.

A visa for social visits is the most common type of visa. This applies towards visiting friends, relatives and for general tourism. Level 1 and 2 requirements are similar with small exceptions. Both levels must complete an application form called a Form 14A - Application for Entry Visa. This form can be downloaded and printed from the internet web page of the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

Level 1 and 2 citizens also must provide one passport color photograph, which will be pasted onto the application form. Have a new one taken, as it must be current within the last 3 months. Be sure it's in color and is a full-face photograph of you without any headgear, Religious headgear is acceptable but your face must be fully visible.

All applicants must provide a copy of the bio-data page from their passport. In addition, the person who you will be visiting in Singapore must provide an original and photocopy of their Singapore Identify Card. They will also need to complete a "Form V39A (Letter of Introduction for Visa Application)". This is a form, which states the reason for your visit and relationship information from your point of contact in Singapore.

Level 1 citizens also must provide a letter from their current employer, which grants a leave of absence, states how long the employee has worked for the company and salary. Those who are not employed and are PRC nationals must show a copy of their household booklet. These requirements do not apply to visitors under the age of 16.
