If you are looking to travel to Ghana in the near future, you will need a valid passport and Ghana visa to travel in and around the country. All citizens should register with the Embassy or Consulate Office upon arriving in Ghana; this will allow officials to locate you quickly in case of emergency.
There are many types of Ghana visas available depending on the reason for travel to the country. Types of visas for Ghana include those for Diplomatic or Official travel, Business, Tourist, and Student or Employment travel purposes.
All visa applicants are required to have a valid passport with a minimum of sixth months left before the expiration date. The Embassy advises all individuals to turn in their visa applications at least two weeks to one month prior to intended travel date.
Four completed copies of the application should be submitted along with four passport-size photos. The photos should be no more than three months, with a maximum of six months, older than the application.
In all cases, but especially when applying for a Ghana tourist visa, an airline ticket should be submitted upon request. Travel arrangements should be made prior to applying for a visa; you could also be asked to supply an itinerary.
Proof of financial means or an invitation letter from a host in Ghana should be submitted. This will allow the Embassy to evaluate your financial stability while in the country.
A letter from the principals of Ghana should be submitted with the application for a Business, Official, or Student visa. A letter from the U.S. can be accepted in some cases.
Processing time for a Ghana visa should take between two and five business days. However, the application processing time is extended to two weeks for journalists or camera crews wishing to film in Ghana. For these types of applications, accreditation must be obtained from the Information Services Department upon arriving in the country.
All applicants must show proof of receiving a yellow fever vaccination as required by the International Sanitary Regulations. Depending on country of residence, certain other health information may be required. You should submit these documents at the port of entry once you arrive in Ghana.
A visa fee is assessed with all applications; this fee is accepted by money order, certified check, or postal order. Citizens of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) can receive their visas free of charge. Valid for three months, single entry visas are priced at $50.00; however, multiple-entry visas cost $80.00. To request expedited or emergency forty-eight hour processing service, an additional fee of $30.00 will be charged.
