Quality guidelines: A passport photo is meant for identification of your person at the customs of another country. Hence, it is important that you appear clearly in it. Attire: There should also be no headgear, wigs, or anything that may block out your features worn in the photograph. Dark or tinted glasses are also not allowed, unless prescribed for medical reason. Articles that are worn in daily life, such as spectacles or hearing aids, should appear in the photograph. When taking the picture, everyday attire should be worn.
Size: A standard passport photo should be 2 by 2 inches, with the size of the face not being less than 1 inch or more than 1 and 3/8 inches.

Color: The photograph must be taken against a white background. However, you can submit a photo that is taken in full color. The final photo that appears on your passport, though, will be in monochrome.
Taking the picture: Vending machine photos are generally not acceptable due to quality and size differences from the prescribed quality of photographs by the US Department of Consular Affairs. When taking the photo, appear relaxed and comfortable. It is acceptable to smile at the camera, as long as your facial expression does not appear constricted.
Applying for your passport: All photos must be taken within 6 months of the application date, and must show your current appearance. Along with the application form and photocopies of the other relevant documents, you must submit two identical copies of the photograph when applying for your passport.
